Slovenia – A unique wealth of natural and cultural heritage: Postojna Cave – Ljubljana, the Capital – Štajerska Region

At 08:00 departure by bus from Milano to Postojnska jama/Postojna Cave, Slovenia.
Milano – Postojnska jama – Ljubljana
In the morning departure from Milan and drive across Po plain pass Padova and Venice towards Slovenia. After crossing the national border our firrst stop will be in POSTOJNA where we will visit world famous attraction – Postojna Cave, which is an example of a highly succesful conservation of natural heritage. Living proof of this is the human fish (Proteus anginus) that reproduce only in this place. We will go on a journey through the mystical underground halls planted with stalactites with a cave train and by foot.

After lunch our trip will lead us to LJUBLJANA – one of the most visited capitals in the world in the last decade. City by the river Ljubljanica tells a story of Roman Emona, about city life characterized by gorgeus art nouveau architecture, about the river interwined with many bridges and lively pulse of the city on one of the most beautiful marketplaces in Europe. After accomodation in hotel and dinner we will go on an evening walk through the old town center which we will complete with a visit to Ljubljana Castle. Overnight.

Monday, July 11
Ljubljana – Celje – Ptuj – Ljubljana
After breakfast we will visit Štajerska. Our first stop will be in ŠEMPETER. Here we will visit Roman Necropolis, which is the largest of this kind in Slovenia.

Then we will drive to CELJE – city rich with Roman excavations. Visit to Regional Museum will amaze us with exceptional Celje ceiling, a unique example of profane painting at the transition from the Renaissance to the early Baroque. At the Museum of Contemporary History in Celje, in the very special atmosphere of Pelikan studio – one of the two still preserved and functioning glass photographic studio in Europe, we will take a group photo to memorize this trip. After the break for lunch we will continue towards PTUJ – the oldest town in Slovenia. First we will go to the castle, where is the Regional Museum Ptuj-Ormož with antique lapidary, which holds the only collection of traditional old musical instruments and ethnological collection of kurent – the most recognized Slovenian traditional carnival mask, it also holds a famous numismatic collection, etc. Our walk around the city center will be completed with a visit and tasting of Slovenian wines at Ptuj wine celler (Ptujska klet) – the oldest winery in Slovenia. Afterwards we will return to Ljubljana. Overnight.

Tuesday, July 12
Ljubljana – Milano
After breakfast our first visit to last day will be the National Gallery – one of the central and recently renovated national cultural institutions, where we will see Slovenian art from the Gothic period to the 21st century. Then we will visit the nearby Orthodox church, which is characterized by tolerant coexistence of different cultures and religions in Ljubljana. During the walk to the emerging museum district of Ljubljana Metelkova we will meet the Roman remains of a city in the Roman Empire, EMONA. Metelkova is surrounded by the Slovenian Ethnographic Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art Metelkova, National Museum of Slovenia and the Institute for Protection of Cultural Heritage of Slovenia. Visit in Ljubljana will be completed with the reception of the Chairman of ICOM Slovenia in Slovenian Ethnographic Museum. After banquet return to Milan is expected in the evening.
