1st day: 10 July 2016, Sunday

MILAN-AOSTA

In the morning, departure by private bus from Milan.

Arrival in Aosta Town, the principal city of Aosta Valley, a bilingual region in the Italian Alps, 110 km north-northwest of Turin and 190 km far from Milan.

Meeting with the English Speaking guide and (if open) visit of the archelogical site in Saint-Martin-de-Corléans,  a “megalithical area”  that gives a brief definition to what was found in Aosta: a large sanctuary in open air along the river dating back to the third millennium BC and marked by aligned historiated statues-steles and grandiose funerary monuments mostly built with large stones.

Time at disposal for lunch.

In the afternoon, guided visit of Aosta city centre. The town is rich in monuments from pre-historical, Roman, medieval and later times. The visit includes the “Praetoria” Gate, one of the few examples from Roman times still perfectly intact, the Theatre; the forum Cryptoporticus, the perimeter of the boundary walls almost completely intact; a well-preserved extra muros villa; and the magnificent Augustus’ Arch.

Entrance to the “Archeological Museum”. The museum takes you on a chronological journey, opening with Assyrian tablets collected by Canon Boson. It also features anthropomorphic statues found in Saint-Martin-de-Corléans; and a reconstructed funeral bed, burial rituals and offerings based on processed bones found in an incineration tomb. The building also hosts the “Pautasso” numismatic collection, displaying money from the Greek era to the Savoy period.

Dinner at restaurant and overnight in 3 stars hotel.
