Varese: Sacro Monte and City Tour

This itinerary takes you on the discovery of the incredible Sacro Monte of Varese, one of the 9 Sacred Mounts which has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The visit includes over 14 chapels that lead to the Santa Maria del Monte Sanctuary along an ancient pilgrimage route. The frescoes and statues inside represent an extraordinary heritage of sacred art from the 17th century in the Milanese territory. A visit to the Pogliaghi Museum (which can also be seen on the door of the Duomo of Milano) and the Baroffio Museum, featuring fascinating Flemish artworks and modern art. 


Sacro Monte di Varese

In the afternoon, continue the visit in Varese, with a stroll from Corso Matteotti to Piazza del Podestà and Palazzo Biumi and the courtyard of the Broletto. This last frescoed building is now home to an elegant store for high fashion. Continue on to the Basilica of San Vittore in the city center, the baroque bell tower by Bernascone, and the San Giovanni Baptistery in gothic style. End the tour with the small 17th century churches spotting the trail until you reach Palazzo Estense.

Begin tour heading up in bus to the First Chapel. Visit the first four chapels along the road by foot. Back in the bus to Santa Maria del Monte and tour of the Sanctuary. Enter the Ludovico Poghliaghi House Museum and Boroffio Museum.
