Turin: the modern city
Turin is a city in constant evolution: from Augusta Taurinorum (27 a.C.) to the capital of the Savoy Dukedom, (1563) until becoming Italy’s first capital (1861), the queen of the automobile industry (1899) and the star of the 2006 Winter Olympics. A city that is just waiting to be discovered in all of its many aspects: filled with historic evidence, acclaimed museums, works of contemporary art en plein air, cultural events, with its characteristic arcades, renowned historical meeting places, spacious parks and magic places.
The arrival of the group from Milan is scheduled at 9.30 to meet the guide and start the visit of the PAV (Living Art Park): a place for exchanging, meeting and aggregating art instances aimed at creating new social models. Bioma, the environmental interactive installation by Piero Gilardi, and Trèfle, the vegetable organism by Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster which has already become a symbol, mainly compose the nucleus of the permanent exhibit.

A bus transfer brings then the group to the Mauto (Car Museum): unique in Italy, housed in the premises designed by the architect Amedeo Albertini, on the left bank of the Po river and a short distance from the Lingotto; it is one of the few buildings specially constructed to house a museum collection, and is also a rare example of modern architecture. The Museum has one of the rarest and most interesting collections of its kind, with almost 200 original cars dating from the mid-19th century to present days, and over eighty different makes of vehicle, from all over the world.

After a light lunch at the cafeteria of the Museum -offered by the City of Turin- the group moves to Lingotto Centre to visit the Agnelli Picture Gallery, housed in The “Scrigno” (literally, jewel box or treasure chest, an extraordinary container that dominates the roof-top test track projected by Renzo Piano). It displays an extraordinary collection of works of art dating from between the 18th and the 20th century and ranging from the Venice of Canaletto and the Dresden of Bellotto to a group, unique in Italy, of seven masterpieces by Matisse.

Next is some free time at Lingotto, where participants may want to visit Eataly: a “megastore” that combines elements of a bustling European open market, a Whole-Foods-style supermarket, a high-end food court and a New Age learning center (definition by the NYT). Afterwards a city tour by bus of the Spina 3 (“Backbone 3”, an area where major requalification works have been carried out in the last 10 years) is planned before leaving for Milan at 6 pm approximately.
