Ivrea: industrial city of the twentieth century
The industrial city of Ivrea was built between 1930 and 1960 by Adriano Olivetti, looking for a new model of city, alternative to the national and international experiences of that period. The result was an outstanding example of the implementation of very innovative solutions. For these reasons Ivrea is bidding to be enrolled in the WHL (UNESCO World Heritage List) as industrial city in the twentieth century: the proposed site consists of a complex of industrial and residential buildings, and social services designed by the most famous Italian architects and urban planners of the twentieth century, mainly along the axis of Corso Jervis. You can also visit the fifteenth century church of San Bernardino, located just inside the area that houses Olivetti´s industrial buildings. The Church of San Bernardino is an attraction of considerable artistic interest by virtue of the large fresco painted by Giovanni Martino Spanzotti between 1485 and 1490 ca.
Once in Ivrea participants will be guided through the area candidates for the WHL. Visits to the Olivetti Historical Archives, National Archives of Industrial Cinema and the Technological Educational Workshop will follow. Participants will visit of the Museum, of the historic city center and, in particular, of the Cathedral of Ivrea. The Santa Maria Assunta Cathedral in fact, with its thousand-year history, is undoubtedly the most important place of worship of the City.
